100 Dresses

This is one of the Sonlight books and up until today I was quite sure she didn’t “get” it or even pay much attention to it. Today I read the second half of the book to her in 1 go, she just kept demanding the next bit and the next. She loved the illustrations, she loved the idea that a girl could draw 100 different dresses, I’m still really not sure she got the “message” of the book which was that the girl was “different” (she’s Polish and ++ poor) and got teased because of it. She saw it as this girl enjoyed imagining her 100 dresses with the others and going home to draw them. I like her version, it lets me off from having to explain racism, bullying and so on.

It did make me think though, I really think that we will re-read most of the SLK books again before going on to SL1. She loves the stories, is well able to sit and listen (or play quietly and listen) to this level of language but I sometimes think that the “message” or the content is just out of her grasp. Then again I thought that at the beginning of pre-K and she has them now as bedtime stories, all cosy and familiar, so maybe that’s the answer?

Me

Requalified for “basic life support” at Red Cross so that ’s CPR and dealing with a major injury “first aid style” have to do it all again in a few weeks “advanced skills style”

Where did yesterday go???

ah, I remember, we went to the dentist…..

actually it wasn’t planned, we walked into town for the library and passed the dentist on the way back. Becca said “mummy, i need to go to the dentist don’t I?” and true enough I’ve been meaning to phone to book her in for ages. So in we go.

Me “can I book Becca an appointment please”
Becca “Mummy, you need to see the dentist too, you’ve got holes in your teeth”
Dentist (just come into reception) “actually I’ve just had a cancellation, I’ll see you both now if you like”
Me (desperate to get out of this) “erm, I’ve not got my wallet with me”
Dentist “that’s okay, you can pay later”

Result being we are both going back next week for fillings, hers are free sadly mine will cost but they do need doing I suppose….
